LANDBACK DINNER, Big Sur

Before 2022, before the rains there were droughts and fires. My Kumu, ( Hawaiian elder and keeper of ceremonies ) old me that when a people returns to their lands, like a mother, the land is happy. I like to think that California coming out of drought and having a year without severely catastrophic fires has something to do with the landback movement. This is why Magdalena Magazine chose to celebrate issue two with the Esselen Tribe of Monterey County in a ceremonial Dinner at Loma Vista Gardens.

We opened the ceremony with vulnerable words from the Esselen Chairwoman Carrie Hethel and other tribal leaders like secretary Jana Nason and linguist Stephen Arceo.

The dinner was generously supplied by Chef Augustine from the Post Ranch Inn who made a delicious Bison Brisket with Elderberry Sauce. This Recipe will be linked in out Good Food page soon!

THANK YOU TO EVERY PERSON WHO CAME TO SUPPORT THIS SPECIAL MOMENT

Special thanks to all of our sponsors who generously donated to our event including Hacienda Hay and Feed for a donation of veggies, Seastar Catering for the plates, napkins and dishes and Loma Vista Gardens for the use of their beautiful Venue in Big Sur.
