STARHAWK

Interview by Michelle Magdalena and Shmee

Its Dia De Los Muertos and my brilliant friend and magnificent photographer Nicole Mangiola is helping to set up an altar in the Mission district of San Francisco dedicated to children who have passed or children who have yet to come. Nicole is renting a room from STARHAWK and so the inspiration and opportunity to meet with the celebrated author and priestess was somewhat destined. We park outside the incredibly tall and classic San Francisco victorian painted in shades of violet and dappled with evening light from the busy street. Starthawk was to meet up with us after we arrived. Just that weekend she had spoken at The Modern Witches Confluence in San Francisco and was soon heading to Yale School of Art to speak to the student body on the importance of artists and designers to influence the world’s future. At this time I had just found out that my mothers best friend Linda Parker of Big Sur, who had been on a healing journey with cancer for 7 years, had finally received a positive report back from the doctor that her growths had receded. She wanted me to pass on the word that STARHAWK’s audio CD set that constantly plays in my mom’s car about “Earth Magic” had influenced her and shifted her mindset to connect with nature which brought grounding; a powerful influence on her healing path on a fully natural protocol. “She helped me get outside myself and into nature”-Linda said.

I was a little nervous to meet with this amazing priestess and did continue to trip over my words, fortunately STAR knew just what to say and had a wealth of inspiration to share with us on this Autumnal night in San Francisco, a place; according to the Witches Confluence that has a rich history of activism and spirituality. In this universal conversation about global climate change, women’s power and healing, my partner Shmee and myself listen deeply to STARHAWKS teachings, lifting the veil on witchcraft, it’s innate reality as a earth based form of devotion and how it relates as a necessary practice for navigating today’s challenges both personal and universal.
