HOW TO DECOLONIZE YOUR DIET

As soon as the term “colonization” began to sink into my psyche as something current and something very very wrong a new word came into the conversation last year as I was renting a room in Oakland, California; decolonization. It obviously seemed to be a great and necessary idea but I could not wrap my head around how we were going to disrupt hundreds of years of colonization in America and the world at large.  It’s literally been over a year since I have began thinking on this topic and the entire time the answer has been right under my nose. Not only was a potential perspective answer in my face; but I was already taking action and preaching it. Localizing our food! For myself and the planet at large, divesting in unsustainable food systems is going to be a great way to combat climate change, eat healthy and build community.

The best foods and recipes are always about the best

ingredients and sometimes you can even find those

for free in nature or in abundance while in season

from your local farmer. For all of us it is hardly

a possibility to live 100% local but it is not

impossible to make an effort to learn foraging

in our local areas and get to know your local

farmers and their seasonal bounty. From fresh

winter citrus or wild harvested mushrooms to

crunchy spring greens, the season always provides

inspiration in the kitchen and brightens my sprits

more than any restaurant could and noting where y

our ingredients come from also impacts your carbon footprint,

so if you have a choice to buy from your own continent or one overseas, you can be empowered to make a conscious choice to shop as locally as possible.

I hope you find new staples in your mealtime favorites in the following recipes and are inspired to dig into the local organic food scene in your community.

With a warm heart,

M3
